Tweet from coach Carroll:

@DHogan44 the guys are hooping at 12:30 Saturday. We have recruits in. I'm on my way to Indy to recruit. I'll hit you up with our workout times next week.

Looks like we're looking for some guys in Indy again. I think this is for next year though.

So I don't think we are really recruiting a 7th player for the 2012 class, haven't seen anything about it in a few weeks. LP, Plano you guys have anything?

Remember that the Late Signing Period is a month long, and I don't think that the staff is ever through trying to add players, especially if they think that the player or players can help improve the team!!!!!!!!!

He can dunk shoot, and dribble pretty well at 6'5" I'd be happy to have him. We only have 2 open scholarships for next year so we need to make them count.

Only 2 scholarships for right now, and hopefully it stays that way. I love his low post game, he has a great feel for how to make shots. Very creative player.

One of my A&M friends said he saw some LU scouts at "The Great American Shootout" in College Station.

Can't find a list of players there but it's apparently a huge event and there are alot of good players that have come out of this such as KP and Chris Bosh.

According to Rivals.com, we aren't recruiting Campbell anymore. I am sorry to see this, he reportedly received an offer from Ohio University recently and he is getting some big time looks. It appears that he is looking to stay in the midwest so that may factor in to why the coaches have laid off.

Rivals.com is showing that Lamar has offered SF/PF Austin Torres from Granger, Indiana. Check out the link below, looks like he is best working around the basket. He's got some really long arms for his frame, so he makes it look easy when dunking. Maybe he'll grow another inch or two.

More info on 2 HS players from Indiana that Lamar has offered:

Mike Crawford: 6'5 Small Forward, Tipton H.S.

Very athletic. Mike has a nice balance of interior and perimeter skills. He can finish inside because of his strength and jumping ability, but is also a very good outside shooter. Handles the ball well too. His versatility is his biggest asset, could really play the 1-4 spots. Can be a little out of control when he attacks the basket at times, but does a good job of getting to the foul line.

Austin Torres: 6'6 Small Forward, Penn H.S.

Austin has really blown up. He is a freak athlete who can simply jump out of the gym. He doesn't really create much for himself, but he is as good as they come at getting offensive rebounds and scoring off of put backs. If he can become a better ball handler and shooter he would be very, very hard to guard.

Both players have multiple offers from mid to low major schools.

I like that you ding yourself to begin by saying it's a poor backing.

It's not directed at any one person in particular, so that's the one difference. A hate crime occurs against specific individuals. Hate speech is protected, whether we agree with it or not.

Doesn't surprise me. Tough to sign the "Blue Chip" style kids to LU, but another season like last year and LU will start to get these kids.

00hmh
10-24-2012, 09:13 AM
The kid was a good prospect. That Lamar was in the hunt is a sign the staff is working hard and the program is attractive to recruits.

Unlike the "blue chips" at high division 1 programs who are much more likely to be one and done, the good prospects we see are likely 4 year players. Coaching and player development means that if we get our share and use the talent well we will be very happy with not scoring every big recruiting battle.

For high division 1 schools losing a big recruiting battle is often very costly. The recruiting of such kids is time consuming and the stakes are high. Pat will remember many recruiting battles at IU and even at Texas Tech, where a coach has to hold a scholarship for a kid, and often ended up with the decision made so late that the Plan B recruit was not available and Plan C was a big step down. If you do get a kid who stays, often the fact he is there means you can't get other kids at his position.

Unlike that, we will likely find a good kid for this scholarship and perhaps one who will end up a better player. That when we win our share of battles, we have a great player for four years, that is a big difference too. If we win one recruiting battle every year, we get a 3 or 4 year starter, and player development and using the other kids signed to best fit the needs, that means we have a strong team and build a strong program over time.

The thing to remember in mid major and low division 1 competition is that "blue chip" at this level is not nearly so much a difference maker. We are stocking our team with good talent, and that means the coaching and player development can make up for a loss in a recruiting battle and that the scholarship will likely be filled with a kid who can be nearly as good, maybe better.

Finding kids who fit and who will work hard for four years is the key. Finding the right JUCO talent to fill needs and building a program will make Lamar a perennial power in conference. The fact you lose a few big recruiting battles is good news. It means we are identifying kids who are talented and every time we win a battle we get payoff for a longer period.

Pat faces a challenge to start that program building with his first few years of recruiting seems to be one he is meeting well. Lamar lost a big part of its senior heavy team last year. This year may be down from last but the recruiting is going well and seems very well focused on the long haul. After this class is filled we will know more, but things look very good.

He just tweeted the same info:

Taking my talents to Dayton Ohio to join the Wright State Raiders

Dayton is just 2 hours from Indianapolis so he's staying close to home. Also, from what I've read the earliest he would have been eligible to play is the spring of 2014 so short term not much of a loss for Lamar.

More info on Marcus Owens:

We saw Owens turn in an impressive performance during the Miami Summer Hoops Festival in July. His productivity and athleticism really stood out to Associate Scouting Director, Rick Staudt. "While he has the build of a football player, the 6-foot-4 rising senior has plenty of basketball skill," said Staudt. "Owens plays bigger than his size as he was active on the glass and put back missed shots over bigger players thru sheer will and determination. He may not have a defined position but he's a guy you put out there because of his production."

Link: http://www.sourcehoops.com/tag/marcus-owens/

He averaged 17 points, 8 rebounds last year on a talented team:

The Bucks of Deerfield Beach High School finished the 2011-2012 basketball season with a record of 23 wins and 5 losses and was ranked in the top 5 of Florida's Class 8A, the state's largest classification. Led by Coach Kenny Brown (6th season at Deerfield), the Bucks are favorites this year to bring home the state championship. Deerfield Beach returns 4 starters and 12 lettermen overall from last year's squad. This year's roster boasts as many as 8 Division 1 prospects including seniors Terrence (TJ) Johnson (23 pts, 7 reb), Marcus Owens (17 pts, 8 reb) and Javaris Jenkins (15 pts, 12 reb). The Bucks are poised for a big year.

Not a bad point, but keep in mind, we are losing Donley next year. This only adds another guy on the "short" end of the spectrum. I will say, however, if he can move and score, I wouldn't be surprised to see him as an oversized guard as opposed to an undersized wing. Wing in high school doesn't always translate to wing in college, but I think Knight will do well with guys such as this one. I'd like to see he and Holliday do well here next year.

A lot of high schoolers are still growing their senior year. 6'4" now may translate to 6'6" next year. Remember Rhon Mitchell's stated height was 6'4" when we signed him. He has grown a solid 2" and maybe more.

I have faith in Coach Knights choices, it just frustrates me to see Niko and Osas bring the ball down and not get the shot to the basket, whether they are fouled or just stuffed by someone who can jump better and is stronger.

Wilson is only 6'5" but I like what he brings on the court for his size. He had some good movement in the lane to get to the basket, I think he would have done really well with last years team. The problem is height, If we could find somebody that nimble but around 6'8 or more we could really compete with the bigger teams in the paint. So Stan and Donley are the only ones graduating, but we did lose Jason Smith, does that mean we still have another scholarship left? The last scholarship really needs to be for either a post or power forward.

Has anybody seen or heard any recruiting scoop. It looks like the guard from Cerritos JCJ is havin a good year, but the power forward Taylor has only started 3 games and gotten limited minutes. His juco stats translate into an early recruiting bust unless there is some explanation for his terrible season. The Florida high schooler looks promising, but we can't expect too much from him as a freshman. I hope coach knight and the assistant are working their tails off to improve the talent for next year. To me, this really only leaves Mitchell, Wilson, Blanks, and *maybe* Minton as guys I want to see back next year. I really don't think the rest are D-I talent. And if Minton can't learn to can the wide-open three teams give him every single possession from the top of the key, I'm not sure he's ever going to work out either.

Sadly, this means that even if Coach Knight has a good recruiting class, we're probably looking at another long year next year given what will be yet another really young and inexperienced team.

While I agree that sometimes highlight films can be deceiving, but come on, it's been a long time since Lamar has had a kid do things like that.

And I'm sure that if the kid was able to play right away, he would be attending IU or Louisville or one of the other countless high major programs that offered him.

Got to agree here. We don't get players that are ranked this highly--clearly the year he'll have to sit played a role in us landing him. But Rhon Mitchell, who had to do the same, was the sole bright spot in this awful season, and should have a really good career at LU. While Darryl doesn't help us next year, it's a great burst of energy for a program that needed some good news.

Now go find us a point guard, some beef, and a three-point shooter. (Hoping that the HS kid might fill that shooting need, but we need more than one...)

I think you're correct. I like the size of the players recruited this year. From what I've seen on Nimrod Hilliard, I would bet he is our starter at point guard with Minton and Blanks seeing good minutes there also. Anthony Holliday also played point at Cerritos although I bet he will primarily be our shooting guard. Blanks can also play a small shooting guard position. We have filled the holes with the exception of a 6'8"-6'10" type big guy. I don't know if we have one on our radar, but it would be nice if that is our final signee.

I initially made some negative comments about Traylor, but I think I misspoke. I now think he was a freshmen at Cerritos and made some decent contributions for a 1st year player. If I'm right, we will have him for 3 years. I like this class.

I'm a little worried about the lack of size on this roster. Good Idea to pick up some Juco's after last season's dearth of experience we cannot afford to rely on only freshman.

Really really need an improvement on perimeter defense if we hope to compete with anyone next year.

I agree with CA, maybe you don't have to have a decent 6-9 or taller player to win but if you don't have one then I don't think you can have more than one player less than 6-3 on the court most of the time because if the other team has a decent post you will have to play to much help defense and that will kill your perimeter defense.

Lamar Pride
05-12-2013, 07:26 AM
I'm not as concerned with the size of the player as I am the mentality of the player. Our best teams in the last few years didn't have a great rebounder that had size. Lamar Sanders was 6'5" at best and he was the anchor of a very good team. Remember Devon Lamb was our best rebounder two years ago at 6'2". With an aggressive, hardworking 6'5" to 6'7" we can compete.

CardAmbassador
05-12-2013, 10:48 AM
Yes but if a team has a 6'10 or taller guy I'd like us to have at least one guy on the court taller than 6'7" to defend him.

I completely agree that rebounders really need work ethic more than anything else. Rebounding is the most tiring part of basketball IMO.

If we are playing a team with a skilled 6'10 player, then we are most likely playing a top 25 basketball team.

If we are playing a team in the Southland Conference with a 6'10 player, then he most certainly will not be skilled and they will be lucky if he can dribble and chew gum.

I go back to two years ago, whenever the only big men on our team were Stan and Osas, and they both played very minimal roles when it came to the box score. I am worried about this teams ability to score. Hopefully Rhon, Keilan, and Donnell progress tremendously this offseason.

geezer
05-12-2013, 08:49 PM
A 6-10 or bigger post doesn't have to be that skilled to control the game against a smaller line up. Sanders senior year McNeese had Penn at 7-0 and he controlled just enough of the game to open it up for the rest of their team against us. Maybe you can get by if you average bigger at the other positions than the team you are playing but you are not going to win consistently.

eagle eye
05-19-2013, 05:46 AM
Size alone isn't a guarantee the player will be effective. Remember 7 footer BJ McClendon? A stud in his Arkansas high school years we found out he could barely walk and chew gum at the same time. I saw him come into a game and foul out within 3 and half minutes. I'll take a 6-9 player over a guy like McClendon any time.

Won't argue that size brings any guarntees, but neither does shooting percentage. Facts are when a player moves to D-1 NCAA basketball they rarely have played consistently against anyone close to their ability during their high school or juco years.
