Yesterday was earth shaking in the NFL because of the volume of injuries suffered by teams all around the NFL. It really started Friday with the death of beloved coach O.A. "Bum" Phillips and continued into today with the death of Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams this morning.
Phillips was the coach of the Houston Oilers in the late seventies during the "Luv Ya Blue" era of the team when they enjoyed the 2nd greatest success in franchise history. Bum and RB Earl Campbell were the faces of the team during that time and Houston and their fans were ga-ga over that team. Bum was fired after the 1980 season when they failed to get to the Super Bowl again. We all know the stories and history of Phillips and it's still a shame they couldn't get past the Steelers in 2 consecutive AFC championship games. Many people feel a ball called incomplete to Houston WR Mike Renfro in the end zone cost Houston a trip to the Super Bowl. Bum was 90 years old.
Bud Adams owned the Oilers/Titans from its inception in 1960 as one of the original teams that made up the old American Football League which spawned the Oilers, Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, NY Jets, Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers and Buffalo Bills among others. Houston played in 3 AFL Championships winning the first two over the Los Angeles Chargers and the San Diego Chargers (the Chargers moved to San Diego after the 1960 season) and losing the third in year 3 to the Dallas Texans who later became the Kansas City Chiefs. The ten year existance of the AFL shook the world of pro football up creating a bidding war for players and gaining enough ground on the old established NFL to warrent a "super bowl" between the NFL and AFL. The Green Bay Packers dominated the first two years but in Super Bowl III the New York Jets victory over the heavily favored Baltimore Colts validated the new league and ended up causing a merger between the leagues which evolved into the NFL of today. Adams was vilified in Houston for moving the Oilers to Tennessee when Houston could not get a bond issue passed to build a new stadium to house the team. Adams wanted a new stadium because the Astrodome could not hold more than about 50 thousand fans and was a poor venue for football mainly because of its size and the most expensive seats on the 50 yard line were the furthest from the field compared to the less attractive seats in the corners of the end zones which were much closer. Adams is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame but he will always be in Oilers fans hall of shame. He too was 90 years old.

Now, that being said here is a list of the carnage around the NFL yesterday.

> QB Sam Bradford (Rams)- Torn ACL - lost for the season
> WR Reggie Wayne (Colts)- Torn ACL - lost for the season
> RB Doug Martin (Buccaneers)- Torn labrum (shoulder) - lost for the season
> LB Brian Cushing (Texans)- Broken fibula, torn LCL - probably lost for the season
> LB Lance Briggs (Bears)- Shoulder - out 4-6 weeks
> TE Jermichael Finley (Packers)- Neck - carted off the field in a stretcher and spent time in the hospital. Status unknown
> S Brandon Merriweather (Redskins)- Suspension expect for one game due to 2 illegal hits on receivers in Bears/Redskins game
> QB Jay Cutler (Bears)- Groin - status unknown right now
> QB Nick Foles (Eagles)- Concussion symptoms - status unknown
> RB Arian Foster (Texans)- Hamstring injury - status unknown
> CB Leon Hall (Bengals)- Torn Achilles tendon - lost for the season

This is only the tip of the ice berg in a weekend that saw a lot of star players who bit the dust this weekend. Keep an eye out as Boomer will detail the ramifications of these losses as it pertains to your fantasy football rosters and some alternatives to replace them in your lineups.

Lets look at who was waiver Hot and who was the Waiver Not's:

2013 Fantasy Football Week 8: Add

Jarrett Boykin, WR, Packers
Jarrett Boykin caught eight passes for 103 yards and a touchdown. He's playing Randall Cobb's old role, so expect him to remain a factor even when Jones returns from injury.

Jordan Reed, TE, Redskins
Jordan Reed is a freak. The third-round rookie had nine catches for 134 yards and a touchdown. Three games with 6 plus catches and Fred Davis was a healthy scratch this week.

Chris Ivory, RB, Jets
Chris Ivory handled the workload following what looked like an early, unnanounced Bilal Powell injury. He gained 104 yards on 34 carries.

Mike James, RB, Buccaneers
Mike James had some tough runs after Doug Martin left the game with a shoulder injury. Martin was spotted with his arm in a sling afterward, so James could be started as a flex Thursday night. ( Martin is rumored to be out for the year)

Harry Douglas, WR, Falcons
More to come from Harry Douglas, who caught seven passes for 149 yards and a touchdown. I do like T.Williams from the Cowboys better though.

2013 Fantasy Football Week 8: Buy Low

Tom Brady, QB, Patriots
Tom Brady's numbers were awful, but the Jets always play him well. His chemistry with Rob Gronkowski will only strengthen.

Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Cardinals
Larry Fitzgerald hasn't done much in two of his previous three games because of hamstring issues. However, he'll have 10 days to heal up for the next game and then he'll have a bye after that. Arizona's schedule will get much easier as well, so make an attempt to pry Fitzgerald away from a frustrated owner.

2013 Fantasy Football Week 8: Ignore

Mike Brown, WR, Jaguars
Forgive me for not being too excited about Jacksonville's No. 3 receiver.

Jeremy Kerley, WR, Jets
Jeremy Kerley is too inconsistent to start.

2013 Fantasy Football Week 8: Who's Not

Miles Austin-Jones, WR, Cowboys
Miles Austin-Jones has been phased out of the offense. He saw just three targets go his way. ( Can be replaced with T. Williams)

Marlon Brown, WR, Ravens
Marlon Brown saw half as many targets as Jacoby Jones.

Vincent Brown, WR, Chargers
Vincent Brown has just four catches in the past two weeks.

Austin Pettis, WR, Rams
Sam Bradford is out for the year, so his favorite receiver has lost all value.

Whatch list:
I have a few guys I have my eye on.

Roy Helu RB his touches will increase

Cole Beasely WR he is quickly becoming the real go to guy for Romo in a pinch

Ben Tate RB Foster will battle this nagging hamstring the rest of thre season and it is a contract year for TATE.

Terrence Williams WR has really emerged as a legit #2 and I look for his down the field #s to really increase as the year goes on.

An addendum to Boomer's post. Ben Tate has 4 broken ribs. He says he intends to play after the bye week this week but a running back with broken ribs won't last long even with a flak jacket.

Any value for the Rams skill positions will depend completely on who is playing QB. Sam Bradford is done for 2013 and the backup on the Rams roster is Kellen Clemens the 30 year old vet out of Oregon. NFL.com has even spit out a rumor that Tim Tebow is under consideration.
