The biggest news in Dallas is that today, after many discussions with doctors and exploring every avenue of treatment, Tony Romo has undergone back surgery to repair the herniated disc that occurred in the Washington game last Sunday. As a result Romo's season is officially done and he was placed on Injured Reserve this morning. The decision for Romo to have the surgery was made late yesterday evening. Jason Garrett has reported in this morning's press conference that all parties felt that the surgery should be done sooner rather than later and the decision was based on Romo's long term health. The time table for his return, barring complications is not certain but it's hopeful he will be available for training camp next summer. Garrett also said that the surgery went well and the doctors are pleased with the outcome of the surgery.
Going forward for as long as Dallas' season remains alive Kyle Orton will be the starter with recently signed Jon Kitna as the backup. There is a possibility that another quarterback could be signed for insurance purposes. Kitna is familiar with the Cowboys offense since he played for the Cowboys between 2009 and 2011. He actually started 9 games for Dallas in 2010 after Tony Romo got his collarbone broken against the Giants. If nothing else Kitna will have a fresh arm and fresh legs since he has spent this past fall teaching math and coaching football at Lincoln High School in Tacoma Washington. Kitna actually texted Jason Garrett saying that he would be available to help the Cowboys if he was needed. Dallas signed Kitna on Christmas Eve.
