BEAUMONT - Lamar University's 2011 football season will get its official kickoff Wednesday when players will report for a 3 p.m. meeting with the coaching staff, and those who have not yet taken their physicals will take those exams at that time.

Coach Ray Woodard's team, the second to represent Lamar since the program was discontinued after the 1989 season, will conduct its first practice at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Practices will normally be at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays and at 9 a.m. on Saturdays. The Cardinals have only two, two-a-days practices scheduled, those being at 9 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 and Aug. 17.

"It's going to be a really tough camp, isn't it?" quipped Woodard. "We're going to have three weeks of practices but only two, two-a-days."

The Cardinals, who are encouraged by a 5-6 showing over which they set 15 individual or team records last season, enter the 2011 season with even greater expectations.

Woodard's second Cardinal outfit will certainly be more experienced than last season's youthful team as 60 lettermen return while only eight were lost, and 20 of last year's 22 position starters return, although some will be contested for their jobs by a talented bunch of fresh newcomers from the junior college and high school ranks along with a couple of major college transfers.
