Quarterbacks Doug Prewitt, Andre Bevil and Jeremy Johnson took turns with the top units in Lamar University football’s first preseason practice Thursday at Provost Umphrey Stadium.
Coach Ray Woodard said the trio will get equal chance to earn the starter’s job for the season opener Sept. 3 against Texas College.
About the running game:
Asked about the depth chart at running back, Woodard said every coach on the team might have the ballcarriers in a different order. Octavious Logan and Cody Hussey (Lumberton) are back. The speedy Michael Venson is now eligible after he missed last season and DePauldrick Garrett (West Orange-Stark) transferred from Navarro. Caleb Harmon (PN-G) might also get some carries. Woodard said he might use a running back-by-committee if nobody steps up.
