I knew it was close but this one caught me by surprise. So far the draft is late in the 1st round and Houston picked #17 this year after having the either the top pick or the 2nd pick in the draft the past several years.
Houston selected RHP Whitley Forest who just graduated from Alamo Heights High School located in Alamo Heights suburb of San Antonio. Here's the page with the pick and an accompanying video of the young man in action. Notice how big this kid at 18 years old! Sheesh!

The draft is in the Lottery A part at the end of Round 1.
Here are Houston's draft picks in all 40 rounds of the draft. Tonight will be Rounds 1 and 2 and Houston doesn't pick until pick #61. Houston doesn't get any extra picks as they have in past years and it's a long time between 17 and 61.

Round 2: No. 61 Pick
Round 3: No. 97 Pick
Rounds 4-40: The 21st pick in each round
Something I like about the baseball draft is there isn't a lot of time between picks and not a lot of hoopla. You don't have a huge crowd raising hell like the NFL draft and there have been a lot of old school players and broadcasters making the selections during the draft. Dick Enberg who was a mainstay in NFL coverage on NBC for years is evidently connected to the San Diego Padres. I kind of like the lower key nature of the baseball draft. They don't have ten minutes between picks and you don't have to listen to Roger Goodell make all the picks to choruses of boos prior to each one. Baseball has to get on with it because they have 40 rounds to get through.
A couple of changes to the rules are a bit interesting.
1. Draft picks can't be signed to major league contracts, only minor league contracts.
2. The deadline for signing a contract is mid July instead of mid August as in years past.
