My prediction. Cards pitch a shut out. Score at least 50. This game might be more about fine tuning for the Cards because this team is not up to the task.

I can't even find their roster online.

Predictions, thoughts, comments?

Discuss!

I still haven't found much. They only have around 1000 students so I doubt there are many scholarship students on the football team. And looking at their record against schools we played last year it doesn't look like they have been very competitive.

Still this will be an opportunity for the Cards to play as a team against another team. Hopefully we focus on not only winning but on getting our mechanics right in every part of our game. We have to play with precision and intelligence so that we are prepared for South Alabama the week after this game.

Just for fun.
final score:
Lamar 72
Texas College 0

also I remember some worries about having the game on Saturday because of Labor Day weekend. But wouldn't this be better than a Thursday game? More out of town residents can make it to the game, and people will still have an extra day for the weekend.

Thoughts opinions? I'm not hearing much out of you guys today.

I think this game is going to be a blow out. It will be a great opportunity for the whole team to put everything they are learning in practice to work in a game against another team (even if the competition is not at our level).

I'll go out on a limb and predict Lamar scores a running touchdown!

No Thursday night games please. If someone is going out of town for the Labor Day weekend then I doubt they'd be going to a football game the night before to see Lamar play.

I'm expecting a blow out with Lamar at least getting 2 rushing TD's. I don't see Texas College being able to handle Campbell and Oden so we should have a pretty good running game.

I'm not going to predict a score because it's anybody's guess as long they have LU winning. I do predict that we will see at least three different QBs play. I think this game will be used to help the coaches erase any doubt they may have in finalizing the depth chart. We will in no way be able to use this game to project the rest of the season. It will, however, be a very entertaining game to watch.

That would be interesting. I don't know if it would be the best competition to judge any QB against but you maybe right. I really don't want to have to switch QB's mid year. Hopefully we can get this thing straightened out before the first game.

I also predict there will be at 4 different WR with TD's.

They should score a lot more rushing TDs this year with two new running backs and a vastly improved offensive line.

I am new to these message boards this being my first post. After reading everything I see that everyone just says whatever they feel like so here's my take. I say that this game is going to be a blowout. However, there are still many questions that this team has to answer. I watched last weeks scrimmage and was impressed with the defense. Still a little weak in the secondary but overall the D looked good. Offensively I wasn't as impressed. I realize there is a battle going on for the QB position so the coaches had to get a look at all three but I mean come on. Each of the three QBs only got like one series. In that series I saw that Prewitt is still not going to win any games but at the same time he isn't going to lose us any games. In Bevil's series, it was like deja vu. Its like when he takes snaps its street ball. Those of us that followed this team last year watched all year as he would make big time throws but what everyone seems to forget is that he was good for at least 2 or 3 interceptions a game and every time he ran the ball he fumbled. He runs around in these scrimmages but NEVER does that in the game. He throws into double and triple coverages all the time. I realize the coaches are trying to win but we saw last year that he is not the answer in my opinion. That brings me to the "great unknown" Jeremy Johnson. I think its fairly obvious to everyone that knows anything about Lamar football that this kid will be the guy at some point. He did not impress during the scrimmage either but it seemed like he never even got in the game. When he did I was half asleep because it was so late. He is the most athletic obviously and he needs more chances to show it in my opioion. Since this topic is about the game I will say that until the coaches make some of these decisions instead of putting them off then I dont know how bad it will be. Last year they played Weber and Langston to close games and I would have said those would be blow outs. I hope that they can figure something out and get this team rolling because with the additions they got in the offseason the sky is the limit for this team.

Thanks for joining Mo. I agree about the QB competition but I'm also not a coach so I don't want to sound like I'm giving out advice when I am in no position to do so.

But from all that I heard about the last scrimmage I think that having 3 QB's competing for the starting job this close to the first game is a little risky. Bevil looked more sharp in the spring and the one practice I saw but he still has TO issues and we can't afford them.

I think it comes down to JJ and Prewitt so lets see who can lead us out of those two. IMO no other QB's should be taking the snap.

Back on topic, I still think we're going to blow this team out, Langston a team we shut out dropped a 45-0 game on Texas College.

IMO it's going to be ugly regardless of who we have at QB against them.

Well, I believe that LU will actually hold the score down as much is reasonable. There is no advantage for us to blow them out. The coaches will want something to get on the players butts & get the attention for the next week. Also, I would run some trick plays early to give South Alabama something else to work on for the next week. I heard one college coach (maybe Stupes at OU) say that for every trick play you run, it cost the opposing teams 30 mins. of practice time per day for that week.

I've heard the same from some other coaches. Some of the better coaches will design trick plays just for the purpose of showing them to scouts. Then when game time comes, they show a completely different look or run a totally different play out of the same set.

I agree with the last two post as I've heard the same. Use trick playes that can have multiple options and formations. Just something else the defense has to prepare for during practice and defensive meetings.

Personally, I still think it will be a blow out for the Cards!

Looking at this team its going to be hard not to blow them out because with the resources I can see they have (or don't have) it's not a fair competition.

We should use the game to fine tune our team and maybe get some of the third string guys a good amount of reps. (After a dominate first half of course)

I have a feeling they will, after the first game last year M&D supply (which is owned by an LU alum) gave the students free access to their port-a-cools. I bet we have some connections to either pay for or get something similar donated. I would urge all not to let the heat keep you away from the game. The game has been pushed back to 7 p.m. and I'm fairly certain the school will learn from last year.

If you're feeling hot at tailgating stop by someones tailgating spot that has an RV. We're all Cardinals, they would probably let you cool off for a bit.

I personally last year began to have problems with the heat, but was able to realize it and get some water and cool off. I did not anticipate the heat.

I think it would be better if everyone hydrate themselves before going to the game and keep hydrated during the game.

Is 30 minutes at 7:00 p.m. going to make a huge difference in temperatures? I'm not so sure it will. I think the people who have a risk of heat exhaustion are the tailgaters that are out and about at 2 p.m. etc.

Until the weather cools down the band is not playing for the tailgaters or anything extra before the games. They are only wearing band t-shirt with the uniform pants and ball cap. Last year it was the marching through the tailgaters in full uniform with all the hot BBQ pits going at 4:30 PM that wiped out many of the students. That mistake was very unfortunate.

There were also more than 40 spectators that were taken to the hospital that evening. The heat here in Southeast Texas can be unbearable if you are not used to the humidity plus hot temperatures. The 30 minute delay will help everyone. Just my 2 cents.

It looks like we will not have to deal with the heat, but with some welcome rain. As hot as it's been today, I will welcome sitting in the rain. I'll just have to cover my gear a bit.

As much rain they are calling for may effect the game on both sides of the ball. As dry as it's been in Texas neither team as had much chance to practice with wet balls.

The question on KLVI this morning, with the event of rain, will umbrellas be legal at the game?
I saw a few last year, but it may be because they did not know. I would rather not have an umbrella in front of me. I'll be using a poncho.

Also to expand the excitement of the game, tune in on the game on KLVI on your Sony Walkman, yea I know, or your Smartphone, Harold Mann will be giving the play by play.

I'd rather go with a poncho. I'm still hopeful that it may not rain or if it does it wont be for very long. 60% coverage of scattered T storms is by no means a guarantee to get wet.

BEAUMONT - Buoyed by its 5-6 record last season and an encouraging preseason camp, Lamar University's football team will entertain Texas College Saturday night in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff in 16,000-seat Provost Umphrey Stadium.

This will be the first meeting ever between Lamar and Texas College, a 755-student school located in Tyler, Texas. While the Cardinals are playing their opener, the Steers already have a game under their belts as they dropped a 47-3 decision at Belhaven University last Saturday.

Coach Ray Woodard's second Cardinal squad is loaded with veterans as 19 of 22 position starters and 57 of 68 lettermen return from the 2010 outfit, the first to represent Lamar in football since 1989. The Cardinals' 19 returning starters include nine on offense and 10 on the defensive side of the ball.

Among the Cardinals' veterans are senior quarterback Andre Bevil, who led the team in passing by completing 157 of 288 attempts for 2,013 yards and 14 touchdowns, senior split end J.J. Hayes, who had a team-high 52 receptions for 745 yards and six TDs and senior linebacker Asim Hicks, who led the team with 102 tackles, including 77 of the unassisted variety.

The offseason additions of huge offensive linemen Daniel Campbell (6-foot-5 and 370 pounds) and Anthony Oden (6-8 and 305) have the Cardinals expecting to improve significantly in their running game this season.

"Our fall camp was very exciting and productive, but we're excited to get down to finally playing games against other folks for a change," said Woodard, who saw his Cardinals set a school record with 429 passing yards in last year's season opener, a thrilling 30-27 at McNeese State. "We're tired of running at each other.

GAME NOTES WITH UPDATED INFO

Some interesting notes:

Lamar will have a definite size advantage over Texas College in the
offensive lines. From tackle to tackle, the Cardinals’ projected starters
tip the scales at an aggregate of 1,515 pounds for a 303.0 average.
The corresponding numbers for the Steers’ probable starters are
1,395 pounds for a 279.0 average.
At 6-foot-5 and 370 pounds, left guard Daniel Campbell of Aldine
by way of Navarro College is the largest of Lamar’s offensive line
starters. Texas College’s heftiest O-Line starter is 6-3, 300-pound
Gerulius Moore from Dallas.

They're not as small as I had seen quoted else where. That's good, I want them to be as competitive as possible.

Another interesting part:

The victory was the Jaguars’ 18th without a loss since they
started their football program during the 2009 season. They went
10-0 last season, and they were 7-0 in 2009. They are bolstered this
season by the return of 18 starters and 56 lettermen.
In last season’s game against the Cardinals, Houston rushed for
a career-high 164 yards, and Lawson McGlon kicked four field goals
much to the dismay of the overflow crowd of 16,150 in Provost
Umphrey Stadium.
It was South Alabama’s third shutout of the 2010 season and
Lamar’s first loss by shutout since a 21-0 defeat by Arkansas State in
1985. The Jaguars held the Cardinals to 12 first downs (one rushing)
161 total yards. They also forced four lost fumbles

I'm so excited about this team. We'll blow out Texas College but I hope we show some sportsmanship and not run up 80 pts and run the ball at least 30 times and score at will in the first half and use the 2nd half to play everyone on the roster who isn't redshirting.

I can't wait to next weeks game as it will be a true test to see how much better our team is this season.

Yeah, if it had just been the drizzle it would have been ok, but when you have 25 mph wind blowing constantly on you from one side and you're wet, it's pretty miserable.

I'll admit that was much worse weather wise than what I anticipated, I really thought it would let up eventually but tropical storm Lee was a jerk!

I ended up sitting in the student section because there were so few people. I would say that in the first half there were around 5,000 and as soon as half time hit it probably dwindled down to about 1,000.

I appreciate all that did make the game, especially the End Angels, cheerleaders and those that did not have a choice.

I wish everyone would have felt that way. Horrible heat last year and we have a sell out crowd, terrible rain this year and there were maybe 5000 fans in the stands at the height of the game.

I know what you mean though, my only problem was that rain kept getting in my poncho when I stood up because my snaps broke. That combined with wind was misery for me. I stuck it out until 7 minutes to go in the fourth.

My Game Thoughts:

I didn't get to pay the methodical attention I would have liked to to every play because I ended up sitting on the student side where watching the game is more about being loud than gluing your eyes to the field of play.

But I did see alot, enough for me to make some statements on the team.

First let me start off by saying that Texas College was horrible, this is no insult to them, it's just the truth, compared to any DI team they just don't match up. Our starters busted through their offensive line at will and could have given the Steers negative total yards if they would have stayed in longer. Their QB did not make good reads, I saw a few routes that he should have hit if he were a little more trained. For this reason I almost feel its worthless to say anything about our secondary, a scrimmage against our own team would have been more productive for them. When the second string secondary was in for us there were a couple of times we looked a little weak on coverage. Now as to the hitting ability of our defense and secondary I can say that we are not afraid to put a body on anyone. This was something that I liked to see. We liked to hit and we liked to hit hard.

Every single DL guy was able to get pressure to the QB, we were simply stronger and muscled our way through their offensive line every single time.

Offensively there is only a few things to say, the wind and rain hampered the passing attack all night long and I don't feel like we got anything out of that game because of it. Bevil threw some passing TD's that were called back because of penalties. JJ threw some decent passes out there that were bobbled and went to the ground, but it looked like he struggled getting a good grip on the ball in the rain. JJ usually as a good spiral but he couldn't put any zip on the ball and kind of lofted his only two deep throws. Now JJ looked like a star on the ground for the two scrambles I saw, at one point the left side tackle let a guy through and it seemed as if JJ just sensed it, he really likes that spin move and took off spinning and bouncing off what seemed like 3 or 4 would be tackles. Prewitt was the most disappointing story and it's not because of his performance, he only had two attempts and that was in large part due to the fact he was working with the 3rd and sometimes guys I think would qualify for a 4th string. The center that was snapping to Prewitt couldn't get the exchange off right. Prewitt's first throw was over the middle and was just a bit too high for his receiver in the rain. If it would have been dry that might have been the best down field pass all night long. I feel like Bevil still forced the ball on the throws I saw but maybe I'm just biased.

That's as most as I'm willing to say about the pass game, it was wet and Bevil probably would have ended up with the most TD's if it weren't for some dumb penalties.

The 1st string offensive line looked great! One of the best parts of last night team. They simply ran anyone over that was trying to get to the QB, they also only had one false start that I believe was on Oden. The second string guys still looked alright but the left side wasn't nearly as good, there is a big drop off, they let a few guys through and they seemed to have many more problems with false starts. This is where we will win or lose games, it's with all the second string guys on both offense and defense.

The kicking game, well it's hard to comment because the wind either hurt or helped, but I must say I loved that we kicked that first ball out of the stadium. Sanchez did have one boot into the wind that was notable, he shanked the rest on purpose, which if fine and all but I would have liked to see him put more of those up in the air so I could get a guage on his leg strength, but the coaches already know it and they're the only ones that need to know.

Still it does appear that the special teams kicking and punting will be better than last year and that is a positive for me.

That's the few comments I have on this game, and really can't wait to see next weeks game because Texas College didn't test us in any category.

I think LAMAR could of put up 100 points on TC but it just looked like to me at some point in the second quarter we lost our intensity because of the level of competition we were going up against. It didn't look like they were into the game like they were when the game started an they were just out there running the that was called.

I agree, but our second string and definitely the third string guys were also just far less dominate against Texas College, they still had the Steers number but we weren't busting through their line on every single play like our first string did. If we had kept the first string in more we would have absolutely murdered Texas College. And if it hadn't rained and gusted at 30 mph the ENTIRE game we would likely have had several more TD's regardless of what string was in.

I now understand why SFA hung 92 on this team, it was likely better weather. Our second and third string guys could have put up quite a few TD's if the rain didn't force us to run every single play on the ground.

I felt that once the team realized that there was no way this team(TC) could even score much less compete, the intensity went out of the game. TC was so much weaker, that I see no real advantage of this game other than it is a win and we know the game routine.

I was slightly disappointed with the amount of penalties by Lamar, but most of all we did not run it up as we could have. I agree with CA in that in better playing conditions we probably would have scored a minimum of 3 more TDs.

Went home at the end of the 3rd qtr, and saw the end of LSU/Oregon game. Also watched ESPN highlights and saw that UGa has joined Oregon in not wearing football uniforms, but football costumes. UGa helmuts looked like they came from NASCAR/F1 Racing.

All the while I'm thinking what am I doing, I could not see the bridge and as I got to the last turn around before the Rainbow Bridge. I then took the turn around. I knew I was going to get wet. I don't have the proper rain gear and I was worried my camera would get too wet.

I appreciate all that did make the game, especially the End Angels, cheerleaders and those that did not have a choice.

BRF2, I know you're a picture guy so check out the pics we just posted from the game last night.
