1982
The Southland Conference is re-classified into the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, and begins participation in the NCAA Division I Playoffs. Northeast Louisiana University (Louisiana-Monroe) plays its first season in the Southland Conference. Louisiana Tech claims its seventh Southland crown with a 5-0 mark, and finishes at 10-3 after advancing to the NCAA Division I semifinals, and falling to Delaware, 17-0.

We now know definitively that Lamar was not the first FCS team to beat a ranked FBS opponent. This in no way a blemish to the accomplishment, we were still a much smaller less notable school beating up on a ranked opponent, we just didn't get the FCS classification until the following year. A technicality yes but one that should be noted.

If any of you're wondering what this post is about: Lamar defeated #20 Baylor in 1981. The only time to any of our knowledge that Lamar has done so in Football. But we did not defeat Baylor while we were in the FCS we didn't get re-classified until the following year.
