The lesson from Saturday's loss is simple for the Lamar University football team.

"It shows where we need to be," sophomore center Kyle Gillam said after the Cardinals (1-1) lost 30-8 at South Alabama. "We're going to come out (today) and correct everything."

The last chance to make corrections before Southland Conference play begins at 7 p.m. Saturday at home against the University of the Incarnate Word (1-1), an NCAA Division II school in San Antonio.

Incarnate Word's coach is former Lamar assistant Mike Santiago.

His team rushed for 305 yards Saturday in a 41-28 victory at home against Eastern New Mexico in a Lone Star Conference game.

Junior Trent Rios rushed for 202 yards and four touchdowns on 34 carries. Quarterback Paden Lynch, a 6-foot-5 junior, averaged 5.3 yards on 10 carries and completed 11 of 19 passes for 104 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions.

I find this as encouraging, this is not Texas College and that is a good thing. They are still clearly outmatched but this team is more successful and appears to be competitive in the NAIA, the lost 28-20 last year to Langston who we are familiar with.

If we correct our mistakes in this game and then put on two good weeks of practice we should be prepared for Southeastern. SELU is aiming for us,, I'm sure they didn't like losing to a start up.

Go Big RED!
