Different perspective on Woodard's performance

Ray Woodard’s nine wins (9-14) are tied for the second-best two year

start in Lamar history for a head coach.

Vernon Glass, Lamar’s all-time winningest coach with 63 wins, led

the Cards to 11 wins over his first two years.

Woodard is tied with Larry Kennan who went 9-11-2 over his first

two years.

^^^This is from the game notes vs. Prairie View A&M. It's nice to keep in mind that he is second in this stat, but also that he has accomplished that in two years as a start-up after 21 years of no team. I know the competition hasn't been overly impressive, but it's still something we can take from his tenure here so far.

IMO, the jury is still out on Coach Woddard because several of those wins were against non-FCS competition. The lopsided losses last year against league teams also put the team in a negative light. This year the Cards need to show they can compete against every Southland conference team, if not win at least make it a good game.

If things look the same after the 2013 season.. there is definitely an issue. I think that Woodard gets a pass again this year, but next year progress needs to be seen.

Georgia State started in 2010 just like Lamar and they got killed at home by an average South Carolina State team from the MEAC conference. They also lost to a non-D1 team last year. They did beat Lamar in 2010, but that was a home game for them and Lamar almost pulled out a win.

I agree with puddin tane, anymore blowout losses to SHSU and/or SFA will get him fired. But I think he'll be around for at least another year because next year's team will be an experienced group with high expectations.

hmm...or Old dominion..27-8 since restarting...went to playoffs in 3rd yr.

ODU has done well, good for them. Not sure what the connection is to LU, though.

really? you dont get the connection?

The connection I get is that puddin is ready to run Coach Woodard off. I believe in giving a man a fair chance to succeed. Two years and one game into the third year is not fair IMO.

Sam and/SFA stomp us again by 50,60+...woodard is toast

If they do beat us by 50, 60+ this year, it would be okay with you to fire him?

If they do again this year, I think he gets a pass because of the coaching changes and new offense, etc... Next year? ABSOLUTELY.

That's the problem, every year you can blame it on some other facet, but at the end of the day, he's responsible for the WHOLE program. At some point, he'll become the only common denominator.

I am not ready to get rid of him today--I'm hoping for good things this year

we get sixty- zipped by a SLC program this year..yes, I would support firing Woodard

--but as CA said, its premature

Premature as it may be, I saw that it was in the game notes and thought it was interesting, so I posted it.

IT IS NOT PREMATURE!! We will be judging him all year. If we do not see improvement from last year to this year, I am not sure that he is here next year. This is exactly when we should be having these discussions. He might buy himself another year if he can show improvement this year, but 50 or 60 point blowouts will not buy him another year. Or at least I hope it doesn't. I support the program either way, but he has been getting his chance this year and for the last three years.

If you don't give people a few years to get a program going no good coaches are going to want to come here.

Think about it. Lamar is bad right now. We fire Woodard and look for a new coach, all those coaches are going to see us as impatient and we're not going to get as good of a candidate pool.

We're only 2 games into the season not enough to judge the season by yet. I don't see us losing by 60 to any conference opponent this year though.
