Time for cooler heads to prevail!!!

I don't post on here much anymore but felt it necessary to do so because I love Lamar as much or more than anyone. I am a former Lamar athlete who was a part of rebuilding a program and more importantly have loved Lamar athletics from the time I entered this world in 1980. Many of you posting on here have never played or coached collegiate sports. I am only saying this because I truly believe for anyone to understand what Ray Woodard and his staff have tried to do over the last 4 years is literally impossible for anyone to understand who has not been there. It does not mean you are not entitled to your opinion but my argument is you don't know what it takes. Ray has done things for this program monetarily that would have NEVER been done if was not the head coach. I know your response is going to be that we didn't hire him to do that we hired him to win games. BS.......he was hired in part to do that because whether anyone wants to argue it or not a program that is just getting started needs money. We are entering the 6th game of year three and people are calling for our BRAND NEW PROGRAMS FIRST COACHES HEAD!!!!!!! I called this 3 years ago because this is what uneducated collegiate sports fans do in this town. For god's sake people this is a brand new program and we want to fire a coach after not even 2.5 years of competitive football. I have and will always say that if a coach is not given 4 seasons then the program regardless of what level it is has done themselves an injustice. I want us to be good worst than anyone but firing a coach this quickly will only prolong the process. Guess what when you fire one you start all over again with a new coach who has new schemes and needs different players. Then you all will be calling for his head in 2 years when he has not been given the proper amount of time to rebuild. Yes I said Rebuild which is much easier to do that BUILD!!! I write all of this hoping some of you calling for our coaches head will take a back seat and support what is going on at Lamar and realize how hard the task that Coach Woodard has been given is. I'll close with this........I was recruited by Lamar University along with several other Southland Conference schools and if I read the trash that is written about coaches on this message board I wouldn't even consider coming to Lamar. That is what our recruits are doing........they read this message board and every negative comment on here is killing a chance at a recruit. That much I can promise you.

Lamar needs better student and fan support, for this to happen they need to be competitive with other fcs schools, not naia or d3 schools, simple as that. Lamar is hard to recruit for, location hurts among other factors, no airport hurts scheduling, etc. kids want to get away from mom and dad so they go rlsewhere. Look at our team, they are small, slow and weak. Wheres the talk about d1 ball , i dont hear it this year, people want a winner. I have season tickets to 4 sports and i can say this team is the worst in woodards 3 years here. If the coaches want fans shut up and win and they will come, dont show local games on tv, sell beer at games try thimgs to get people there amd for season tocket holders reward them somehow. In closing lamar will support a winner but lose amd people stay home

i agree with most of what sleepy is saying.i dont agree with the recruiting part though.every message board in the country has negative posting on it about there coaches and players.i saw a few weeks ago where sam houston wanted to fire there o-cordinator after there 1st loss.it happens.fans are passionate.do i want woodard fired?no,not right now.but he has got to show some improvement asap.

@Sleepy If I am not mistaken Woodard is causing his own demise, he ran Whitten off and relieved himself of DC duties. So if we have to learn a new system he should of thought of this before. He says we have no deep threat, what about the stud from osu!! If his recruiting coordinator does not do a better job then we will reap what we sow. As a head coach he has had one winning year in his career. By the way you are not the only one to play collegiate sports. I appreciate your thoughts but to blast us is not correct, by the way what year did lu rebuild?? Peace out

Thanks for the post Sleepy. I agree with most of what you have to say. Whether we like it or not...collegiate coaches have to fund raise as well as win games. I am not happy with the way things are progressing but everyone seems quick to sink the ship. Some of these guys need to step back and take a breather. Of course, Coach Woodard didn’t do himself any favors by placing some of the blame on the fans.

Where have you been??? No one wanted Whitten here for the past 2 years. He was giving out resumes to whomever would take one since the day he got to Lamar. Glad hes gone.

@QB 22 Woodard did not run Whitten off that I can assure you of. I was a part of the middle of the rebuild of the golf program. I graduated in 2003.

All I know is k was 13-10-0 in his prior stint as oc!! Please let us know how you are so sure of what happened to whitten. Not to knock golf but it and football are two different animals. How about giving me 3 a side and lets play!! Peace out

I now live out of town but would like to get it on. Maybe we could get together when it is good for both of us as I am retired and do not know you work schedule. I have no doubt they read it, but if they read it here they'll read it on every other schools fan forum in the country if they have a bad week or two.

 

The negative post are normally from some of the most passionate fans that don't hesitate to post their opinions whether they are correct or incorrect. Ultimately I don't think it's the final deciding factor in a kids decision.

 

BTW I agree with most everything you said in your original post.

G.E. well I feel like we need to have our O.C. if you will go back to what made him, that is a spread type aka Westcoast style offense. The (O) side of the ball was recruited for that type of play. When losing like this last one go ahead put the young guns go. I hear the are restless and still carry a winning attitude. If you gone to lay an egg try fresh young guys that want to fly around put up numbers and feel they can win and make an difference, would it hurt ..? other recruits see the have a chance to hit the field turns to a chance to bring them in. Nick Sabine says Fresh - Senior every practice is a new tryout to start. In closing put the best players on the field and win that formula works well he has moved from school to school and gone to the highest level at each one. It's lower I know but like offenses everyone runs the same stuff do what fits your players..! 8)

Its one thing to be a rebuilding program (or in our case a building one) and hit some bumps in the road, but you still have to show improvement. No one is asking for a SLC championship, but we can't play like we have so far this season and expect for the fans to be OK with what is going on. Constant regression each season.

Sleepy brings up a lot of valid points. I believe the $2 million donation from a few years ago was largely due to Woodard being the head coach. And since this season is not yet half over yet, SELA could prove to be one of the top teams in the SLC and Woodard may win 2 or 3 conference games.

 

Other have brought up UTSA and how they are doing it right, well Georgia State is similar to them (large school, large metro, play in a dome, veteran BCS coach) but they are now 0-5 and Bill Curry has already announced he won't be back. It's easy for us to say Woodard should be fielding a more competitive team but there's no guarantee of that.

 

I still believe Woodard will be back next year. This is a young team (especially on offense) learning a new offense and defense. The only two blowouts so far have been against FBS teams. Looking back at the SELA game, even with the lousy offense they could have won it with a few lucky breaks.

I'm sick of "its hard to recruit Beaumont"..been to huntsville?..nacogdoches? lake charles is Beaumont with casinos boats....conway , Ark...main attraction--- pickel gap village Hammond..thibodeaux? none of these towns are on anybodies must see and visit bucket list..
