Lamar Baseball vs Sam

After the rough start Hibbs appears to have settled down giving up an additional run in the second and then having a one, two, three inning in the third and holding Sam scoreless in the fourth. Mean while LU scored four runs in the 3rd and picked up two more in the fourth to take a 6-5 lead going into the fifth.

SAM had a big 6 run 3rd to go up 7-1. LU came back scoring 2 in the bottom of the 3rd to close to 7-3. They were in the 4th when lightning became an issue. I guess we'll get back under way when the light show stops. Lamar has plenty of time to come back.

Todays game was suspended in the bottom of the fourth due to weather. Plan is to pick this game up tomorrow and play the final game of the series also. In other early action today UNO beat SELA for the second game in a row. That leaves the Cards three and a half games behind. Also early in the game but Northwestern St is up 2-0 on Nicholls. A Northwestern St win would leave them one game behind LU in the win column. Cards need to get the bats going tomorrow and pull the sweep.

Game three not looking good for the Cards as the game is going to the top of the 9th with the Cards down 7-4. Also Northwestern St is up 6-1 at Nicholls in the bottom of the 8th. A Card loss and a Northwestern St win would drop the Cards into a tie for third and fourth place for seeding purposes in the Conference Tourney.

The pessimistic side of me is coming out considering Lamar sports. While the Cards are guaranteed a spot in the conference tourney which is an improvement over the football and basketball seasons this year, the pattern is similar in that the season started out very promising but once it came time to perform against the better teams in the conference Lamar failed to step up and take control. In baseball the Cards are a combined 2 and 7 against the top three teams in the conference and must win at least one game next week at SFA to keep from dropping all the way to sixth place after having a chance to get into first place over the final three weeks.

The Cards did win one of 3 against SAM. Unfortunately, the one game I could make was yesterday's thumping. Even at that, Lamar hit the ball and they were an inch or two off on contact which made the difference between going yard and having a fly ball caught on the edge of the warning track. If some of those balls were pulled to left they would have been windshield bait in the parking lot. LU's pitching wasn't great yesterday, or Saturday for that matter, and that's been a strength of this team this year. KABro is right when he says it doesn't change a thing as far as the conference tourney. If you have to reflect on the last two weekends it's a shame Lamar couldn't do more with the opportunity they had. They had home series against the #1 and #2 teams in the conference and only managed 1 win in 6 games. Oh, what could have been. We have one more conference series against SFA and it's pretty big. Tournament seedings will be finalized this week and Lamar could remain in 3rd place or, if they get swept by SFA, they could end up as bad as a six seed. Lamar needs to turn this recent losing streak around because these games do matter and they need to go into the conference tourney on a winning note.
