The Olympics Have Been A Good Show

Between the success of swimmers Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky to the team win by the women's gymnastics team to the excellence of Simone Biles winning 3 golds so far in the women's team, women's individual and the vault with more to come possibly to the resurgence of USA's premier women's beach volleyball team of Karri Walsh-Jennings and April Ross who beat Australia last night to advance to the semi finals of the event. They will have to beat 2nd seeded Brazil tomorrow to advance to the final. The USA is leading in total medals with 70 medals followed by China (45), Great Britain (38), and Japan (26). The USA leads all countries in gold medals with 26 followed by a tie for 2nd place by China and Great Britain who both have 15. It's been a pretty good Olympics except for the USA's women's soccer team who were eliminated in a 4th round match by Sweden on penalty kicks. Never fear the girls are still partying their asses off in Rio despite the loss.
I turns out the Zika virus is a pretty lame virus. There is a real chance those who have it don't even know they have it because the symptoms are just aren't that bad. It's not that bad for anyone except unborn babies. The Zika can cause severe birth defects so the athletes can't be getting pregnant right now or traveling home to girlfriends or wives who may be expecting children. Aside from this the zika isn't all that bad. When news first broke about it there seemed to be some worry that a global pandemic was about to burst upon the world. Those crazy guys from the media, they sure can blow a story out of proportion can't they?
What isn't funny is USA swimmer Ryan Locte and 3 teammates were robbed at gunpoint by muggers in Rio as they were on the their way to a friend's birthday party last night. Nobody was hurt and all that was taken were the men's wallets. It's a pretty big black eye for the authorities in Rio who are supposed to be providing security for the athletes.
Closing ceremonies for this Olympics will be Sunday night beginning at 6 or 7 o'clock.

Re: The Olympics Have Been A Good Show

Simone Biles got her fourth gold medal of the Olympics when she won the floor exercise on Tuesday. She sets a record for an American by winning the four golds but you have to feel she's just a bit disappointed because earlier she had to settle for bronze in the beam exercise. Still, Biles tied an Olympic record with her four gold medals and she is clearly the best gymnast at these games.

The USA women's volleyball team of Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross also suffered disappointment as they lost their semi-final match against Brazil's Agatha and Barbara in straight sets. It was a close match to be sure and the US team wasn't just playing the Brazilian women they were playing against a nation, or that's the way it seemed, with a definitely pro-Brazil crowd on had. A crowd who literally had the stands at the beach volleyball stadium rocking and rolling with every single point won by the home team. Give the USA girls credit, they made the Brazilians, who go by just one name, earn every point in their 22-20 and 21-18 victory. Walsh Jennings and Ross would never admit it but the tremendous crowd support had to be the difference in this match. The whole atmosphere was more Carnival than it was volleyball and with the stands swaying with the dancing in the stands it had to be unnerving. It was the first ever Olympic loss in beach volleyball for Kerri Walsh Jennings who had won gold in 3 previous Olympics with her former partner Misty May-Traynor who retired in 2013 thus ending her hope of winning 4 straight golds in Olympic competition. The USA will now play Brazil's other team of Larissa and Tulita. You may notice the women's volleyball teams only use one name copying their counterparts in soccer. At any rate it will be another home town team against the Americans and this time it will be for the bronze medal. Agatha and Barbara will play Germany's Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst for the gold. Both matches take place today.

The US continues to lead in both total medals (84) and gold medals (28) as the games wind down. With only 4-1/2 days left it seems unlikely they will be caught at this point. 2nd place Great Britain (50, 19) and 3rd place China (51, 17) are going to be hard pressed to catch the US team.

The US men's basketball team is in action this afternoon as they face Argentina in their quarterfinal game. The men's volleyball team also plays a quarterfinal game against Poland this morning. Women's water polo team has a semifinal match today against Hungary.

Jenny Simpson of the US women's track team won bronze in the women's 1500 meter race and thus became the first US woman to medal in the event. Way to go Jenny!

The US women basketball team destroyed Japan in a quarterfinal game 110-64 to advance to the semi's.

The US men's gymnastics had other good news with Danell Layva taking silver medals in both the parallel bars and the high bar.

The US took gold and silver in the triple jump competition. Christian Taylor and Will Claye repeated their gold-silver finish from London 4 years ago in Rio yesterday.

The best Olympic moment came in the women's 5000 meter run when at about the 3200m mark the US's Abbey D'Agostino collided with Nikki Hamblin of New Zealand with both crashing to the ground. Hamblin tried to help D'Agostino up but he had hurt her leg and she encouraged Hamblin to finish the race. At first Hamblin tried to help D'Agostino but D'Agostino couldn't run because of her leg injury. It was a great Olympic moment for sportsmanship and there is a happy ending of sorts. After a protest both D'Agostino, who did finish the race despite her leg hurting, and Hamblin who finished 16th were both advanced to the final to be run on Friday along with a 3rd runner affected by the collision Austria's Jennifer Wenth. Nice going ladies, and good luck!

Re: The Olympics Have Been A Good Show

I was a little harsh when I said there was nothing interesting at this Olympics. Of course Michael Phelps closes his career with yet another gold medal, Katie Ledecky showed her dominance in swimming as well.

There have been upsets that shocked the world and brought gold home to the US like in the 53 KG women's wrestling gold medalist Helen Maroulis became the 1st woman to even medal in women's wrestling. Maroulis beat Japan's Saori Yoshida who had dominated the sport like no other for the past 3 Olympics prior to Rio. Yoshida had won almost every competition she entered since 1998. The 33 year Japanese wrestler was looking to close out her Olympic career undefeated with 4 gold medals but in Rio she had to settle for Silver. Yoshida was so devastated that she literally wept from the conclusion of the match all the way through the medal ceremony. Tears were streaming down Yoshida's face as they hung the silver medal around her neck. Helen Maroulis wept too but her tears were for joy as a plan she devised two years ago finally came to fruition. Her main focus as she trained for the Olympics was to defeat Yoshida, a woman most people considered unbeatable. Maroulis didn't believe that story and she worked on her game, dieted to get down to the 53kg weight and studied film and interviews and article about Yoshida to try to figure out what made the Japanese superstar tick. Maroulis' plan worked to perfection as she beat Yoshida 4 points to 1. Yoshida is the most decorated wrestler in Olympic history, male or female, and even though she had won everything in her sport losing was still a heartbreaking and soul crushing event. I have never seen a competitor weep like Yoshida did upon losing. On one hand it was sad to see how much winning meant to her and on the other hand you kind of saw a spoiled brat who finally was introduced to the reality of life.

You certainly didn't see that kind of what can only be called poor sportsmanship from an athlete like the USA's Karri Jennings Walsh who had the same type of success in the Olympics as Yoshida. Jennings Walsh was going for her fourth consecutive gold in beach volleyball when her and her partner April Ross were defeated in the semi final match by a team from Brazil. Jennings Walsh and Ross were obviously disappointed but they showed a lot more dignity in the loss than Yoshida.

Okay then there's Usain Bolt of Jamaica winning the men's 100m, men's 200m and the men's 4x100 relay gold medals. This dominance in track is unheard of before in fact this is the 3rd Olympics in a row Bolt has pulled off this feat giving him a career triple triple which had never been done in Olympic competition before. He can rightly be considered the greatest short distance runner in Olympic history, his record proves it.

    Ryan Lochte is a douche.

The Women's basketball team plays for the Gold against Spain this afternoon while the men will play Serbia in the final for the Gold on Sunday as one of the last events to conclude in these Olympics. The men had a tough go of it in their semi final game against Spain winning by just 6 points 82-76 to move on the final game. They will face a Serbia team that easily beat Australia in their semi final 87-61 to set up this showdown with the USA team that was heavily favored coming into these Olympics.

The USA is running away with the medal count. They have 105 total medals and 38 gold medals. The next closest in total medals is China with 66 and next closest in the gold medal count is Great Britain with 25. If the USA quit every event left they would still be the clear winner of this Olympic Games. Congrats to the athletes and shame on the media for overblowing the Zika virus scare and predicting such doom and gloom in Brazil. From every view we get on TV Rio is a lovely place and the Zika virus is dangerous only to unborn children. Some people got the virus and didn't even know it. I look forward to the closing ceremonies on Sunday night but I'll have to DVR it because The Last Ship is on there is a lot going on challenging Capt Chandler and men and women on the Nathan James. Not to mention a coup d'état of the President of the USA in his new capital in St Louis. I really can't miss that.

Re: The Olympics Have Been A Good Show

Rio was a good Olympic event. Beautiful scenery, spectacular athletic feats and the USA wins the medal race. What more could you ask. Okay, I guess you could ask Ryan Lochte to NOT be a big douche but that's pretty much it. The men's basketball team rounded out the last day with a drubbing of Serbia, a team they only beat by 3 points in a preliminary round to win gold for the 3rd Olympics in a row. As for the medal count, the USA ran off and hid winning 121 medals 46 of which were golds. Great Britain was 2nd with 67 medals 27 gold followed by China with 70 medals 26 gold. If you rank by gold medals then that's how it went but if you rank by total medals then China is #2. Either way, it was a very enjoyable Olympics with the greatness of Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt, Katie Ledecky and the women's basketball team there to remind us of what greatness looks like. The USA also took a big gold medal in the decathlon. Ashton Eaton bested the field to have the right to know as the greatest athlete in the world. If anyone wants to dispute that you need only look at the fact that this is Eaton's second decathlon win in the Olympics as he took gold in London 4 years ago. Not to mention winning the event at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow and the 2015 World Championships in Beijing. In the final event, the 1500m race, Eaton only had to finish second to France's Kevin Mayer but he ended up beating him and winning the race tying a world record in the bargain. Eaton is only the 3rd man in Olympic history to win back-to-back decathlons. The USA's Bob Mathias won it in 1948 and 1952 in London and Helsinki was the first to win two in a row. England's Daley Thompson was the second to do so in 1980 in Moscow and 1984 in Los Angeles. It was a great Olympics and a great closing ceremony. The Last Ship was good too.
