    Football Hosts Community Kickoff Event

More than 100 Red and White clad fans packed Spindletop – Gladys City Thursday evening to help celebrate the anticipated start of the Mike Schultz era at Lamar University. Fans turned out to hear Schultz -- who is just the program's second head coach since its rebirth – speak about the upcoming 2017 season.

Unfortunately, Mother Nature attempted to upstage Schultz at the beginning of the event as heavy rains hit the area as the program was slated to begin. LU's fan base proved they were undaunted by the elements as they continued to turnout despite the downpour, and children took advantage of the opportunity to play in the rain.

After nearly a 20-minute delay, the fans were treated to a pre-game style pep talk from the Cardinals' new head coach that had Schultz walking away from the mic at the end of his speech to a loud ovation. The weather may have cancelled the scheduled gusher re-enactment at the end of the program but it didn't dampen the spirit of the Cardinals' fans.

Last night Coach Schultz spoke of a QB transfer coming in that they are excited about. Anyone know who???
Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that.

Darrell Colbert from SMU. I had mentioned him in the 2017 recruiting thread when it looked like all signs were pointing to him transferring here. Schultz mentioned it at the SLC Media Day and that was the first confirmation I had heard on it. He also mentioned returners Andrew Allen and Adam Morse as part of the 3 man competition but didn't mention returner Blake McKenzie. Idk if that mean McKenzie has left the team or not. He is still listed on the online roster but it hasn't been updated in some time.

I read he's already graduated from SMU after only 3 years. He must be a smart kid. He also had an offer from Yale before choosing SMU. I'm thinking he'll be the favorite coming into fall camp.

Fans: Lamar Football In Good Hands With Schultz

For many Lamar University football fans, Thursday's kick-off event at Spindletop Gladys City was their first chance to meet first-year coach Mike Schultz.

Sue Xanna Reid, 72, heard through word of mouth Schultz had a "vibrant, positive personality," but wanted to see for herself.

Former Lamar football player Bud Leonard, who played for the Cardinals from 1948-52 and is in the Cardinal Hall of Honor, was looking forward to picking Schultz's brain about "his tireless work ethic" and the upcoming season.

After meeting Schultz, both agreed Lamar's football program is in good hands. They anticipate his first season will be successful.

‘A New Start’: Familiarity Helps Schultz Form First Lamar Staff

Coming off a national championship with James Madison, it appeared Jamal Powell had found a home in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

And then he came back home.

“First thing is that it’s Texas, and I’m from Texas,” said Powell, Lamar’s new offensive coach who’s from Channelview. “It’s good to come home to family. One of the bigger things is coach [Mike] Schultz. He recruited me out of high school. I trust him. He recruited me to TCU when I was 16 years old.”

Schultz relied on plenty of ties in his 37-year coaching career when he announced his first Lamar staff in January. Powell played three positions on the TCU offensive line creating holes for a future Pro Football Hall of Famer named LaDainian Tomlinson.
