Lamar vs Sam Houston Saturday

Both men and women are at home Saturday with early and late afternoon games. The ladies start at 2:00 and the men are scheduled for 4:30. For the men this is the start of an important three game home stand where the Cards play three teams that are all ahead of them in the conference standings. These three games may well determine where the Cards can realistically finish in conference already having three losses. Right now the Cards are tied for the 8th and last slot in the tourney. The women are currently 5-1 in conference (fourth place) and with a win will move up one slot in the standings as ACU and UCA play each other so one of them will have two losses after Saturday.

Cards scoring draught continues as at the under twelve minute media timeout Lamar has just two points while Same has 12. Sam isn't shooting real well either is the only good news for the Cards. Too much selfish offense for Lamar and poor ball movement.

Halftime and Lamar is down by fifteen points 32-17. Cardinals shot just 21% in the first half while Sam shot 46%. Lamar went 5-9 from the free throw line while Sam was a perfect 8-8. Cards had their usual turnover performance with ten. Sam has also outrebounded the Cards by seven. Fouls is the only place the Cards are in reasonable shape with just six team fouls but two of them are on Bosha and two on Harrison. Sam has twelve team fouls with four players having two fouls each. It will be difficult for Lamar to dig out of this first half performance, Price is going to have to try something different as his offense has struggled each year. It may be time to try a new offense.

You know, at least Pat Knight took LU to the NCAA tourney before sucking big time after a getting a raise and contract extension. Tic Price only took LU to the SLC tourney before sucking big time after his contract extension.

How can the athletic department pick good coaches for the women's teams and totally suck picking coaches for the men?

Eight minutes left and the Cards are down by ten. While they could come back I wouldn't want to bet on it even if you gave me a point spread. I just don't believe this group is enough of a team to pull it out. Will be lucky to make the conference tourney.

Going to overtime as the Cards stage a good come back in the final eight minutes, but as usual the Cards still found a way not to win as Noel went the length of the court for a lay up to tie the game and then steals the inbound pass with three seconds left but just throws the ball way up in the air to run the time out rather than attempting to go score again. He's probably a really good kid but he makes a lot of bone head plays.

Guess we need to talk bad about Lamar some more as they win the game in overtime 84 -77. Have to agree with the announcers that the Cardinals comeback was in a large part due to Frenchwood controlling the game in the second half at the point guard. Garth was the scorer, and Nzeakor stepped up on defense, but Frenchwood got Lamar to run an offense and get good shots. Cardinals came back to out rebound Sam for the game and maybe most importantly hit the free throws at crunch time. Edited by geezer

The other key is getting back our starting point guard who has been out in a boot for awhile.Hopefully he remains healthy as he can create his own shot when the clock is running down and is an upgrade overall on offense and defense we have been missing.

How long has he been out? That may explain something about these ridiculous scoring droughts we’ve been having lately. 2 games with 16 point halves and this game with a 17 point half.

Looking back at this years individual stats he doesn't show up for the previous two games against SELA and IW. After watching yesterdays game maybe he would have made the difference for the SELA game, but I have seen him get into a similar game as what I complain about Noel being out of control and not using the other players effectively. It's not just the point guard though. I've watch multiple times where Weisbrod, Nzeakor or the other bigs get the ball on the block and refuse to pass the ball back out when the double team comes and instead force a shot an hope to draw the foul. Hoping to draw a foul when you shoot less than 70% from the free throw line really isn't a big help to the team.

Corpus lost their stud point guard and are now 1-5 in conference.Northwestern St lost their stud point guard and are 0-7.McNeese lost their point guard for a game against Nichols and lost a close one.Frenchwood's foot had not improved enough so he had to not play and wear a boot that was obvious on the bench.Hopefully his foot feels good today and the rest of the season.I am hopeful his return to health brings us closer to the team that beat Tulsa on the road than the one that has struggled lately.Tulsa is 11-9 and 4-4 in conference but took number 5 ranked Wichita St down to the wire and lost only 72-69.Starting point guards matter!

Ironically, Frenchwood didn’t play in that win against Tulsa.

Cards miraculously found a way back last night, let’s hope they can keep momentum on their side. We know they have the talent.
