Adeyi is an interesting case. He initially committed to Houston in September and signed with them in the December signing period. Then he “decommitted” from Houston last week. I used “ “ cause since he was signed, the school would have to sign off on releasing him from his letter of intent. Then he gets an offer from SFA and SHSU, then he posts on twitter that he has been released from his LOI and gets an offer from Lamar. Normal NCAA transfer rules should still be in place since he signed a LOI with Houston meaning he could be eligible immediately at the FCS level but would have to sit out a year at the FBS level. This happened with a high profile player this year in 5-Star WR Bru McCoy. Committed to USC and even enrolled early. His 1st day on campus was the day it was announced new USC OC Kliff Kingsbury (who was a big part in McCoy signing with USC) would be new Arizona Cardinals HC. McCoy then opted to transfer to Texas. What a world we live in...

Interesting, hope we can land him over SHSU or SFA. We could use his speed at wide receiver and kick returns.

Today is the start of the 2nd national signing period. Just a reminder as always that some of the names under commits might be preferred walk ons and won’t be announced by the school but they still might have a signing ceremony.

What do preferred walk-ons actually sign? Does it commit them to anything? And do NCAA rules prevent the school from talking about them until they enroll/practice?

Some schools will send their PWO an “agreement” to sign at their ceremony but it is non binding on either side vs LOI that is binding. Signing days at high schools have become a big deal and it gives the school a chance to acknowledge the player getting an opportunity at the next level in front of family and friends.

PWO aren’t technically a part of the program until the arrive on campus so therefore they can not be discussed publically by an member of the athletic department. I have seen players accept PWO then end up showing up at a different school on scholarship in August.

Another tactic that is becoming even more prevalent are what are called Greyshirts. Basically a Grayshirt is a player who either doesn’t enroll until the following January or pays their own way for the fall semester as a regular student. Come January they are put on athletic scholarship and count towards that next year signing class. It also delays their “clock” from starting so it doesn’t count as a RS season.
