Earl Thomas Gets The Shaft

Since playing the Cowboys last season and making a point to ask Jason Garrett to make a deal for him the Thomas to Cowboys talk has been non stop. The Cowboys did try to make a deal for him but the Seahawks price was just too steep. The Cowboys were going to hang their hats on Geoff Heath, Xavier Woods and Kavon Frazier. Thomas reluctantly repored to the Seahawks and decided not lose all his salary for 2018 holding out. He was still hoping for a trade that included a long term deal and some financial security but yesterday against the Arizona Cardinals Thomas broke his leg. He had a plastic cast on the leg and had to be carted off the field to the locker room. Thomas was hurt by the Arizona bench and as he was leaving the field he gave the finger to the Seahawks sideline, most likely to Pete Carroll. There will be no trade. There will be no long term deal. When he becomes a free agent after the 2018 season he will likely not get the type of deal he wants, or deserves, because he is coming off his second broken leg in the past few years. Earl is a local guy and you root for local guys and this is a really unfortunate situation for him. He’s got a rep of being a good guy so him flipping off the Seahawks bench because he wasn’t flipping off his team mates he was flipping off Pete Carroll and the Seahawks front office because this busted leg just cost him millions of dollars.

Thomas has earned roughly $55 million during his nine seasons in the NFL, according to Spotrac.

As usual, Puddin', you take the negative route. You disparage Earl Thomas' plight in the matter of his broken leg suffered last week falling on the old 'boo-hoo he makes so much money I can't possibly feel sorry for him' stance. It's true $55 MM is a lot of money but the whole point is he was looking for what we all would like. A job with some financial security to provide for his family. There is no doubt that the money he made off his last contract should set him up for life. 55 mil would set me and my kids and their kids up for life but if you look at it and NFL player has 10 years to make the bulk of the money he will make in his lifetime. The NFL league average is a shade over 3 years. You condemn a guy like Thomas who is looking for a long term deal because the money he's already made is more than we will make in our careers. Puddin' I know you know this but NFL players often leave the game with broken bodies that make it hard to live to be old men. If they do that $55 MM will be eaten up in medical bills and health care costs. Those guys have to pay insurance premiums too and you know how one devastating illness can cost you your life savings to survive. It's also a pride thing. The notion of wanting a big contract as a reward for past play isn't unheard of. I, and my co-workers, get a bonus every year and the more of the metrics we meet as a plant and as a company determines how big that bonus is. Wanting to paid for all you've done in the past is not unheard of. The Seahawks forced Thomas to honor his contract, in which this is the final year, instead of renegotiating a long term deal. For an NFL player that is like a slap in the face especially when you are regarded as one of the best at your position. Thomas reported to the Seahawks after holding out all through training camp because he could not afford to sacrifice all the money he was scheduled to make this season but it doesn't mean he had to like it. The broken leg he suffered against the Cardinals will cost him a lot of money when he's a free agent next spring. It's the second broken leg of his career and comes at the worst possible time for him financially. That's why he flipped off the Seattle sideline. Why would Thomas feel that way? Why, Seattle was just making him honor his contract. It's a worthy argument until you remember than NFL teams break contracts all the time. Teams cut players in salary cap moves all the time regardless if a player has multiple years left on his contract. They recoup the millions in his salary even though that is offset by however much is prorated over the remaining years of his contract as it pertains to the NFL salary cap. If the NFL can ignore a player's contract then it's fair for players to demand more money before the current contract expires. That's capitalism, baby. I do feel bad for Thomas and it could be the best thing for the Cowboys when he comes back because they likely won't have to pay as much for him as they would if he didn't break his leg. It's more a matter of principle than money. That's the point here Puddin', too bad you missed it.
