    Cardinals at SFA Basketball

Big opportunities for both the ladies and men today. First up is the ladies at 2:00 PM followed by the men at approximately 4:30. The ladies can keep their undefeated conference record in tact and take sole possession of first place when they play the Lady Jacks who are also undefeated in conference play. It is fitting that the number one and two preseason picks are at this point a little over half way through the conference season. The men will follow the ladies and have a chance to defeat the SFA men for the third straight time and second in a row up there. A win can put the men in good position to make the tourney as the majority of the remaining games are against the bottom half of the conference standings.

End of the first quarter and Lady Cards are up by two. First quarter saw the Cards score first with SFA coming back to take a lead at 7-5 and pushing out to a 13-7 lead before the Cards settled in and made a run including two three pointers by Kinard to go on top 19-13 befor SFA closed out the first quarter scoring.

Second quarter belonged to SFA as Lamar commited turnovers and fouls in addition to the shooting percentage falling off signifacantly. Knard and Miles each have three fouls at the half, with Barrs and Crump each having two. Kinard put up 15 points in the first half despite missing about the last four minutes of the half after her third foul. SFA leads by five at the half.

SFA Lady Jacks extend their lead in the third quarter to twelve points. Lamar has continued to struggle with Kinard unable to get going with the three fouls from the first half maybe slowing her down. Also Crump tweeked an ankle or knee early in the quarter and sat for a little while.

Lady Cards try to make a comeback closing the gap to four points, before SFA hits a beg three followed by a Lamr missed shot and layup for SFA pushes the lead back to eleven points. Kinard hits a three pointer to close back to eight with 31 seconds left in the game. Final score SFA 70 - Lamar 58.

Lamar men get out to an early lead on a couple of three pointers from Hunter and at the first media time out Cards are up 12-2 and FA does not have a field goal.

Cards have maintained the double digit lead through out the first half despite Nzeakor going out with two fouls at about the thirteen minute mark. 2:36 left in the half and LU is up 39 - 26.

Cards are up 45-29 at the half. The only real negative for the Cards is fouls as four of the five starters have two fouls and Kolawole off the bench has three fouls. Barrett has eight points and eight rebounds. Hunter has eight points and Garth is leading the way with fourteen points.

Through the first two media timeouts in the second half LU is still up ten points but SFA is chipping away at the LU lead. Cards are up 57-47 with 11:45 left to play but it will be SFA ball coming out of the break. Hunter is on the bench with four fouls.

7:23 left in the game and Holmes fouls out. SFA is now down by five going to the free throw line. Hunter is still on the bench with four. Oh it would be nicde to have a really good point guard to control the floor. Turnovers continue to set SFA up.

What kind of world are we living in where the women lose and the men win?

Wonder what is with the SFA Men's team? They were overwhelming SLC preseason favorites and seem to be mediocre, was it injuries?

I think your seeing one of the effects of coaching turnover. Maybe they didn't get a really good coach this time. Kaspar was solid and after a long tenure at SFA moved on. The next guy was able to build on Kaspar's success and get some good recruits and continue the trend for his brief tenure. When he moved on and this coach came in you get recruits wondering will he stay my whole time at SFA. Also is this coach as good as either of the last two? It is year three so the first two recruiting classes are starting to come into play.

It’s nearly impossible for schools to keep replacing successfull coaches long term. LU ran into this problem after Tubbs left in the early 80s.
