February 3, 2024 Basketball at Corpus Christi

These are the games you want to play in at the halfway point of the conference season. Both games are to stay at or near the top of the conference race. The ladies are tied with Corpus and Southeastern La for first and the winner will at least maintain a tie for first. The men are tied for second with Corpus for second and the winner will be in sole possession of second, but still two games back of McNeese. Ladies tipoff at 1 PM.

Big day for Lamar MBB and WBB versus Corpus Christi.

End of the 1st quarter and CC is up by three points 15-12. As expected, an evenly matched game to this point.

Lamar outscores Corpus by ten in the 2nd quarter to take a seven-point lead into the half but could have been more except for a very sloppy turnover with under ten seconds left in the half to bring the difference down to seven. Davis picked up her second foul early in the second quarter and spent most of it on the bench. Lamar scoring has been very spread out as the Cards have two players with six points, one with five, one with four and four with three. Edited February 3 by geezer

Third quarter is close to even as Lamar builds up to a thirteen-point lead but the Islander's trim the gap back to nine at the end of the quarter. Lamar 46 - Corpus 37 Lamar settled for too many three point shots and haven't been making them.

Beginning at the end of the third quarter Lamar's offense goes stale and through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter Lamar hasn't scored and Corpus has erased the deficit at tied the game.

Lamar was able to regroup and outscore the Islander's over the last five minutes to secure a 63-57 win.

Men's game started about fifteen minutes late as the ladies' game ran long. At the first media time out Corpus is up by three 9-6.

For what it is worth, SeLa is leading McNeese men in the 1st half in Hammond.

First half ends with Corpus up by nine, 37-28. Cards have three more turnovers than CC, Corpus has three more field goals than Lamar and four more rebounds. Fouls are about even. No really big runs by either team.

Lamar comes out playing well in the second half and closes the gap to two points over the first four and a half minutes, trailing 42 - 40 with 15:17 left in the game. Edited February 3 by geezer

SELA beats McNeese, A&M beats Lamar, conference really tightens up.

LU has 1 road win and 1 win against an opponent with a winning record, and both of those was the OT win at Nicholls.

Well Lamar has Monday off and gets their second shot with Nicholls next Saturday at home, followed by road games at UIW, UNO and SELA. To stay in the top three Lamar will need to win these next road games before the rematch with Corpus.

I knew Corpus Christi would be tough at home. They had McNeese beat a couple weeks ago only to lose by one in the final seconds.

I think one big reason this team has been much better than in the past is we play TEAM basketball on offense. We actually run plays other than the STUPID high pick and roll by the center and we actually feed the post, which leads to a lot of our half court offense success. However, we still occasionally turn back to that HERO basketball, me vs everyone. I love Anderson but he is one of the main culprits of that. (Calmese, Prior, and Buckley were the ones in the past). Prior has improved a ton with running the team (although he occasionally goes into hero mode). Buckley has spent, until lately, a lot of time on the bench. If we can cut that crap out almost entirely, we will be very tough to stop offensively. On defense, we still give up too many open threes. Typically it is because we try to trap or double team someone. Against a poor three point shooting team, fine. Double team/trap the post. Against a good shooting team, we cannot double team the post. Our center has to step up and guard the post one on one.
